The clear partisan nature of Pakistan today

Obama cannot ignore the clear partisan nature of Pakistan today; but will he act?

These notorious figures were believed to be enjoying the patronage of Pakistan intelligence agencies in the past and are allegedly involved in terrorist activities in India and in Pakistan. The reaction of the US government on these arrests seems to be positive. Former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice reportedly said that the Pakistani establishment has had historic ties with LeT although now it’s committed to fighting them. She accused that the group was not only involved in the Mumbai carnage but also moved in “the same circles” as Al Qaeda. But Condoleezza is the past; Obama is the present. And he has been mysteriously quiet on critical issues in Pakistan; and even has gone on to give a cryptic statement (post the Mumbai attacks), that if his country experiences such an attack, he would support an open attack on the perpetrating country.

Is that philosophy of his supposed to be promulgated by India now that Obama has come to power (given the fact that Bush has strong-armed India into muting their protests to diplomatic circles only)? Obama’s camp fails to clarify the same. “Pakistan is a different place now with a civilian government and an army leadership that is working in concert to try to bring an end to extremism within Pakistan,” Rice has been quoted as saying. But it must be kept in mind by Obama that what we are witnessing today in this part of the world is the logical outcome of decades of brainwashing of Pakistani youth through formal and informal education and it’s a lofty task to eradicate irrationalism from the minds of a considerable chunk of the people. According to The Subtle Subversion: The State of Curricula and Textbooks in Pakistan, a research study published in 2004 by Sustainable Development Policy Institute, an independent think tank based in Islamabad, “[Many say that] the classical religious education mixed with militancy is supposed to be the deadly mix giving rise to the narrow vision that breeds hate and irrationality resulting in the international jihad. This however is not entirely true. Madrassas are not the only institutions breeding hate, intolerance, a distorted world view, et al. The educational material in the government run schools do much more than madrassas. The textbooks tell lies, create hate, incite jihad and shahadat, and much more.” It further comments: “Over the years, it became apparent that it was in the interest of both the military and the theocrat to promote militarism in the society. This now gets reflected in the educational material.”

Still beating the dead horse, Bo?

Rather than being a voice outside the “Washington echo chambers,” TEAB has become synonymous with a pseudo Treasury doing more harm than good to the Obama administration. It is high time Barack Obama – ‘Bo’ for short – scraps the board, says B&E’s gyanendra kashyap.

One word which aptly describes November 4, 2008, is ‘historic’, and rightly so. It was the audacity of hope that saw a Black family taking up the ‘first’ mantle inside the White House on that day. Interestingly, since then, the rhetoric has been ‘change’ and ‘hope’. Three days after the election, President-elect Barack Obama announced a 17 member Transition Economic Advisory Board (TEAB). Till now, the advisory board which was constituted to offer the President-elect independent voice about how to ensure a strong economic recovery from outside of the ‘Washington echo chambers’, has been functioning more as a pseudo Treasury.

Rather than being known as advisors to Obama on how to navigate through the worst financial crisis in modern history, many of the TEAB economic crew can be dubbed as the Bailout Bunch – not because they worked out a bailout plan, but because, they themselves required a bailout! Consider the DNA of the economic crew and you find that almost half of the people on Obama’s economic advisory board (including Lawrence Summers, Robert Rubin, Anne Mulcahy, Richard Parsons, William Daley, Laura Tyson and Penny Pritzker) have held fiduciary positions at companies which either fried their financial statements or helped send the world into an economic tailspin. The leading figures in the transition team, Lawrence Summers and Robert Rubin have both been enthusiasts of deregulation – a major factor in the financial crisis.

“The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act – not only to create new jobs, but to lay foundation for growth,” was what Obama said to the TEAB. A majority of the members of TEAB had been very instrumental in the economics of Obama’s presidential campaign. Given that, it is surprising that even after a year, Obama’s massive campaign apparatus has been largely still doing nothing, than some members demanding another wave of bailouts – for example, lobbyists within the TEAB, such as Laura Tyson, argue that the $787 billion stimulus package was a bit too small and perhaps what is required is a second stimulus package which will focus on infrastructure projects.

That’s pretty bold and near kooky, considering the fact that as of this month, only $173 billion or 22% of the Federal Reserve’s $1.3 trillion “adrenaline shot” has been spent. This, to the view of many, is too slow, too wasteful, and too unfocused as compared to Obama’s initial intention of bold, swift and employment generation. Chairman Waxman of the Energy and Commerce Democratic Press Office, and Daniel Virkstis, Member, US government’s Committee on Finance, while separately inviting B&E’s queries on the efficacy of the economic advisory board, had not responded till the time of this article going to press.

Parents: Happy and Gay!

Same-sex couples are coming out for adoption…

One of the best gifts that one could give someone is ‘life’. You may not be God, but in the form of a parent, you could be his personification for a child. Like Sushmita Sen has shown, it’s not essential to be with someone to be a parent either. Being a parent may not be easy, but this call of eternal love and emotion comes from within. In the present day scenario, there has been a surge in the number of gay couples going through adoption agencies. Adoption sure is a tough decision, and so is the procedure. Even for a conventional couple, child adoption isn’t easy. After a formal application and an NOC from CARA (Central Adoption Resource Agency), the couple has to wait till the authorities find a child suitable to their expectations, and unlike the common belief, parents are not permitted to choose their baby. Adoption isn’t as difficult abroad as is it in India, but it’s nearly impossible to adopt here if you’re gay. Homosexuality has found legal acceptance and sex between gays is no longer a crime, but according to the Supreme Court ruling, there have been no comments as regards marriage rights between gay couples or their adoption rights.

It’ll be long before India opens up to the idea of gays getting married and thereafter adopting a child legally, but for those, for whom love knows no boundaries, such beautiful relationships already exist. “I just got my son married to a girl. I found him on the Bandra Station when he was 13-years old. I raised him and supported him to be able to earn his bread. No one taught me how to be a mother, but I knew it... it is a feeling which comes from within. My partner and I never feel that we are incompetent as parents,” says Mr. Girish Kumar a.k.a. ‘Nihsa’, who lives with his partner Mr. Praveen Sharma. Just like all parents, even gay couples assume roles within a family. One assumes the role of the father and the other, that of a mother. All these feelings come to them very naturally. A child strives for love, care, tenderness and optimum support and guidance. These aspects of one’s life are not subject to sex, and can be fulfilled by anyone who feels for it in the right manner.

Pakistan, distrust and India

First of all, it’s impossible to convince a Pakistani diplomat to officially offer a quote. Secondly, meeting a Pakistani diplomat is more interesting than can be explained in words. During our meeting with the diplomat at the Pakistan Embassy in India, when we asked him to state 5 issues Pakistan dislikes about India (we had two hours), he mentioned 10 in 15 minutes. And when we asked him to mention 5 things that Pakistan appreciates about India, he took an hour and 45 minutes! Some excerpts: “5 things we appreciate about India...”

PEOPLE TO PEOPLE CONTACT:
The relationship between India and Pakistan is unique in itself. While there is tension at the top level, both the countries are enjoying good people-to-people contact. There is less hatred among common people, which is a good sign for the future relationship.

NEW LEADERSHIP: With Dr. Manmohan Singh, the soft, polite gentleman as the Prime Minister, and emergence of Congress leadership, Pakistan hoped that the new leadership would bring change in the already troubled and vulnerable Indo-Pak relationship. But although he has been elected twice, not much has been achieved. Still, we hope that he can bring some change.

ECONOMIC GROWTH: Not only Pakistan, it is in fact the entire world today that acknowledges the economic growth that India is witnessing. Such high economic growth would definitely help neighbours in the long run. At the same time, bilateral trade relationship has also seen a tectonic shift.

EXCHANGE OF DELEGATION: Another important area of improvement is in the area of exchange of high level delegates between both nations. A number of high level delegates visited Pakistan from India, and vice-versa too. This is undoubtedly helping to reshape the image of each other.

PEACE CONSTITUENCY:
There have also been many peace constituencies created, organised and managed. Peace is the only thing both the countries are looking at; these constituencies have enough scope to bring development.

Kemah Tinggi Hotel

‘Welcome to paradise’ is what this luxury villa subtly whispers in your ears the moment you step in…! Defining luxury in a whole new way is what Kemah Tinggi is all about. Unmatched hospitality and exquisite comfort cushions you from the hectic city life. Kemah Tinggi (high pavilion) derived its name from the dramatically tall and open-sided structure in the centre of this luxury villa. Regular life needs to take a breather and this is the place to unwind. With exquisite calmness that one is greeted with, and immaculate service, one feels as if relaxing at the Creator’s Spa. Curl up with a book in your hand on a comfortable hammock while watching the palms sway to the beats of your favourite music and enjoy the waves crashing near you. It’s time for you to welcome this paradise of a moment into your life!

The view: One could watch the sunset in the evenings across the rice paddies and the frangipani trees offering shade to the lush lawns. The luxury villa has been tactfully designed in a fashion that it gives one the most spectacularly scenic view of the Indian ocean.

Archi type:
Specially designed with its soaring columns and dramatic roof, guests could frame the views across the sparkling pool and lawns towards the green rice fields and crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. The interiors are understated with Balinese accents and are tastefully decorated with rich and neutral tones. The contemporary aesthetics at once seem sophisticated and simple and at the same instance they are intimate and casual.

Bon appétit: Contemporary specialities, along with Asian and Indonesian dishes, are bound to trigger your taste buds. A highlight is the special children’s menu that is ready to pamper your little ones. Balinese cuisine suggests a few exotic specialties such as Lawar, Bebek Betutu and Babi Guling which are a must try.

Around the corner: Bali is such a small island that everything is... well, just around the corner. It’s best to set camp at a luxury villa like Kemah Tinggi which is in the suburbs and offers tranquillity. At the same time, it is close to all sites worth a visit such as the Seminyak, Kuta Beach, Ulu Wato (cliff top temple).

Outliers!

Then, if Gladwell’s10,000 hour rule is about practicing one specific task for a considerable amount of time, does the corollary mean that companies that are focused on core businesses (focusing on limited specialized tasks) would perform better than diversified companies? Were C.K. Prahalad and Gary Hamel right all along? In December 2006, Heuskel, Fechtel and Beckmann of the Boston Consulting Group, in a massive global study covering hundreds of global corporations from 1996 till 2005, proved that shareholder returns of diversified companies beat both the stock market average and the shareholder wealth average of the majority of the core focused corporations. BCG writes that “there is no statistical correlation between (core) ‘focus’ and shareholder value.” When we analyse the B&E Power 100 listings this year on this parameter, we were in for a shock. Giving BCG a flyby, of the 100 companies we had, only one is truly diversified. 99 other companies focus on singular or very narrow streams of businesses. Even when we consider groups/promoters (e.g. Tatas, Birlas, Reliance) who own cross holdings in various companies, we could only reach 16 companies that belonged to diversified groups.

Out of 16 listed industries, a majority of our companies (61 of the B&E Power 100) belong to only four industries – financial services (30), metals and mining (11), oil and gas (10), real estate (10). Out of the same 16 sectors, only 3 have positive profits growth year on year – financial services (30%), information technology (12.9%) and FMCG (9.75%). All others have negative growth in profits, with oil and gas (-20.8%), pharmaceuticals (-32%) and real estate (-44%), killing the profits growth of the overall B&E Power 100, which stands at a measly 3.3% year on year.

A lesson taught ...and learnt?

from the ceo to the office boy, from the business tycoon to the paan waala, from urban to rural; mobile handsets have travelled a great distance in india, and so has nokia. but thanks to the latest twists in the tale, nokia may need to adapt quite a bit very soon

The ‘Black & White’ era went into decline mode in India way back in 1982, when the first colour TV sets were introduced on the occasion of the Asiad Games (movies were already in colour, though; interestingly, India’s first indigenously produced colour film was Kishan Kanya; way back in 1937). But the ‘grey’ era continues to be strong till date. Not on your screens, my friend, but in markets. Ask the MNCs and they will recount, in horror, countless stories on how the grey market has, time and again, wreaked havoc with their plans.

And that was just the beginning of Nokia’s quagmires when it entered the Indian market in 1995. It was a market where mobile phones and services were a luxury item. With the prices that these models commanded, you could get a decent second hand Fiat car in those days!

There were a few key planks on which Nokia played its cards, and played them well. Firstly, they developed phones specifically for the Indian market, with durability to withstand Indian conditions and features like torch, vernacular SMS, news feeds, et al. Also, with other players like LG, Sony and Samsung being perceived as diversified consumer electronic companies, Nokia scored heavily on the fact that it had a core focus on mobile phones & developed strong brand equity.

Also, it developed phones for all price points. They backed this up with an intensive distribution strategy and were greatly helped by the tie up with HCL Technologies. “We realised that one of the main challenges was the geographical spread of the consumer and hence we invested extensively towards overcoming this challenge,” reveals Vineet Taneja, Director, Marketing Nokia India.

“No schemes! No gimmicks!!”

LG finally had it right the third time in india. now it is decisively upping the stakes

B&E: What factors have worked for you in India?

VT:
We have been in the Indian market for 14 years now, and believe that our foresight and belief in the country and commitment to the telecom market, along with work with the government have helped grow the telecom industry. Nokia devices today straddle a comprehensive range of products at every price point for all segments. India is not only its second largest market globally, but is also one of the only three countries, where Nokia has an end-to-end presence, including a manufacturing unit, R&D centres and over 10,000 employees.

B&E: What strategy did you adopt in the initial days to help you penetrate the Indian market?

VT:
Nokia had a holistic approach towards developing the market and growing its consumer base. Our strategy has hence been focused on investing before time, understanding different consumer needs, building a strong product portfolio that caters to all segments of the market and making our products and services relevant to the Indian market. We were the first to invest in setting up a robust distribution network, to understand the potential of having an effective after sales network. Today, our reach and scale is amongst the best in consumer durable industry, let alone handset industry.

3 Tenets: Navigating change for growth

As consumerism further evolves, companies need to look at different ways to innovate and stay relevant

Gone are days when superior quality of product or being the best of breed was a sufficient barrier to entry and protect market leader positions. Nowadays, there is increased reliance on the softer aspects of business such as building brand awareness/ brand loyalty through marketing communications strategies, establishing strategic partnerships, keeping product features fresh, new and relevant; all while leveraging innovative platforms such as social media.

In these modern times of technology, rapid gratification and labour market mobility, organisational change is a way of life. This change could mean any number of things from shifting organisational culture, to operational processes to strategic directions. One needs to learn to expect it, and plan for it. Microsoft has created a plethora of great examples for dwindling companies that did not prepare for change. Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect were all at the top of their game when a little known company called Microsoft entered the market with Windows/Office. These companies underestimated the competitive landscape and now they are struggling relics of the information age. Much as this is true for large businesses, it is also true for small businesses as information savvy consumers will now gravitate towards competitors who are able to offer the best value for money and/or a differentiated buying experience. In order to protect your financial bottom-line, you need to be able to understand the rhythm of your market, separate out the urgent from the important, and build in enough flexibility into your system to be able to change with market needs.

360° Vision
I love the quote, “Without a destination, it is difficult to know which road to take.” When you know what to change, putting the ball in motion becomes the easier part. Some of your change will be a result of internal growing pains e.g. evolution of your product and story, and some of it will have to be driven by your competitors. There has been an explosion in small business growth as, in addition to the traditional groups, several laid off workers have struck out on their own. It is becoming a busy, and noisy, marketplace. With consumer knowledge at an incline, it is imperative to understand competitive positioning so that you can react and change direction when needed. Monitoring competitors’ pricing, product features, sales strategies and anticipated strategic directions are key in prioritising areas of change.

Empowered Organisation
If there is one thing you need to instill in your organisation’s work habit, it is the ability to separate the urgent from the important. Business execution and putting out daily fires is necessary but not sufficient. In doing so, you are probably inhibiting your growth as it becomes difficult to anticipate opportunities, let alone prepare for it. If need be, enable the appropriate employees to take on the lower priority tasks while you shepherd the strategic direction for your company. This means establishing well-understood processes that give employees some degree of freedom to make responsible decisions. Their solution may not be your first pick, but ask yourself, ‘does it get the work done?’ And if so, move on. This sense of ownership of problems will bring efficiency of epic proportions, and will help build a workforce ready to react.

International Curry

Some international campaigns succeed in creating momentously historic landmarks in the global advertising playfield. 4Ps B&M brings to you a review of one such stellar campaign that was active during the fortnight ending March 07, 2012.

Wrong movie, right message

Advertiser:
EMDA Israeli Alzheimer Association
Ad Title: The wrong movie
Category: Ambient

4Ps B&M Take: There are very few advertisements which can draw attention to a social cause so effectively that viewers are forced to ask themselves questions about their own contributions to society. Lesser so in the case of movie hall advertisements, where the theatre audience in general considers advertisements (not movie trailers) simply a waste of time (as they are either repeats of television advertisements or are of poor viewing quality as ad agencies in general do not care to convert a television ad into a wide scree HD format). Riding on the tagline ‘The wrong movie,’ it was the Tel Aviv (Israel) based advertising agency, ACW Grey, which did the trick for EMDA Israeli Alzheimer Association, which wanted a normal human being to experience the feelings of confusion and disorientation experienced by over 100,000 plus Alzheimer patients in Israel. The campaign was simple, but very effective in putting across the idea to the TG. After an audience had taken their seats in a movie theatre anticipating to watch the movie that they had come to see, the movie that was started was a different one. Expectably, confusion quickly took over the auditorium and the people began to wonder if it was their own mistake for having sat in the wrong theater or if the cinema was to blame. While some startled people took the exit, the ones that stayed over kept wondering what was going on. However, after a short while, the agency revealed the plot – it was the International Alzheimer Awareness Week and they wanted to make people experience the issues faced by patients suffering from Alzheimer’s, a disease that is predicted to affect 1 in 85 people globally by 2050.

The Idiot Box

There are ads, and then there are those 10 that have personified the concept of how branding can be made to work for the product most efficiently and effectively. From creativity to brand recall, from concept to execution, these 10 advertisements have grabbed our attention – thanks to the commitment of the teams that created them. We present you with our review of the top three ads.

It’s the cable guy, stupid

Advertiser:
Tata Sky
Baseline: Isko laga dala, toh life jingalala
Agency: Ogilvy India

4Ps B&M Take: The problem in DTH services (which you don’t have in other industries) is that customers can rarely identify differentiated services. Your competitors offer the same channel-packages as you do, their transmission signals are comparable to yours; and most importantly, in a market like India, even the pricing factor doesn’t give you an edge. But one DTH player is seen making an effort to break through the clutter with effective communication. In its recent TVC campaign (“Sorry Sir”), Tata Sky converts this ‘clone’ technology problem into a human behaviour problem, and uses it to its full advantage. The most recent of the TVCs (‘Sorry Sir 2’), shows how a married man begins to doubt his wife’s intentions, when at an hour-and-a-half past midnight, he finds her discussing films on the phone with a stranger. His wife explains that she had no option but to watch films and decide on which ones to watch next on her own, as he could not spare time to take her to the movies. The doubting husband waits for her to leave the room. Then he gets to the phone and redials the last dialled number in an attempt to find out more. “Welcome to Tata Sky. May I help you?” is the response he gets from the other end. He is relieved (apparently, Indian women don’t date cable guys). The man hardly realises during this call that his wife is standing right behind him. What follows is the wife’s glaring expression, with a voiceover saying, “Sorry Sir, par Tata Sky ki service kuch hai hi aisi. Koi bhi zaroorat ho, hamarey call centres aapkey liyey 24 ghantey khuley rehtey hain...” The TVC has a non-complex script and set, but scores points in terms of impact and clarity of message (the 24x7 customer service), with a dash of humour. Sans noise and a big celeb, this creation and execution (by the Tata Sky team at Ogilvy and director Vivek Kakkad) is worth more than a shout of jingalala! (Yes, we know, ‘jingalala’ still sounds crappy...)

Their grass was greener

Two CMs who bravely defied anti-incumbency and emerged trumps in both assembly and Lok Sabha elections

The people of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa seem to be dwelling in a wave of pro-incumbency at the moment. This is obvious seeing how their respective CMs – YSR Reddy and Naveen Patnaik – have had a smooth ride in both the state and assembly elections. In the case of the former, its supporters say that Reddy’s plank to back women empowerment paid rich dividends when it won 156 out of 294 assembly seats and emerged as the largest contributor to the Congress kitty at the centre with 33 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats.

On the other hand, Naveen Patnaik’s party BJD literally conquered Orissa; winning 103 out of 129 seats in the state assembly and 14 out of 21 seats in the Lok Sabha. It is the state’s most comprehensive mandate ever.

In an interview, Patnaik attributed his success to the robust pro-poor agenda that his government initiated. “We had launched several safety-nets for our below the poverty line (BPL) population like the Rs.2 rice scheme, the Gopabandhu pension yojna and housing schemes for the poor known as the Mo Kudia Yojna. People responded to it and appreciated it. We are happy that we succeeded in spreading our irrigation programmes for farmers as well as the paani panchayat systems for the control of water by the farmers.’’

Now he want’s to continue where he left off. A normally reticent Naveen outlined his post-poll priorities, “My first interest is pro-poor programmes, meant for a large tribal and scheduled caste population. We are also keen on irrigation schemes for farmers. We have to generate revenues and job guarantees.’’

BURMA: AUNG SAN SUU KYI

Burma needs urgent help

This also means that Myanmar would be seeing more international pressure. The EU and the US have already said that they would continue with their sanctions and more can be expected in the future. The Security Council is against the junta regime and in a press statement, the Council said, “Members of the Security Council express their concern about the political impact of recent developments relating to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.” Within Asia also, the military rule is losing support. The ASEAN has shown clear support to Suu Kyi, which has been thrashed by the junta government. They have accused Thailand, the current Chairman of this block, of “interfering in the internal affairs of Myanmar...”

The junta doesn’t seem to be taking any cognisance of democracy and human rights. Therefore, international pressure must be stepped up in a more coordinated, sincere and effective manner to ensure that both Burma and Suu Kyi see the light of day.

In the dark...

Burma needs urgent help

More is always less for Myanmar’s military government. And they still have the gall to consider extending the house arrest of world famous leader and 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner Daw Aung Suu Kyi and gnash their teeth at the international community for meddling in their affairs! As per the latest update, Suu Kyi’s confinement may be extended. The whole drama has come up just days before her five year long house arrest was supposed to end. Apparently, an uninvited American visitor swam to the house where she was placed under house arrest and pleaded that he be allowed to stay for a while as he was exhausted. Suu Kyi allowed him to stay for 2 days, for which charges of violating the house arrest have been pressed on her.

Well, nothing much better can be expected from a government, which has been in power with sheer use of force. While Myanmar has declared elections by early next year, Suu Kyi has clear approval ratings from the people of Burma. But if Suu Kyi’s period of detention is extended, which in all probability would happen, then there is chance that the country would be forced to languish under the military rule for more time.
