BJP & AIADMK are most likely to come-together once again
As Gujarat chief Minister Narendra Modi arrives in
Chennai on January 14th -to attend a function organized by the Tughlaq editor Cho Ramasamy, he also would have a luncheon meeting with the AIADMK party supremo Jayalalitha. This has set off speculations of Jayalalitha rejoining the National democratic alliance (NDA). AIADMK & BJP had parted ways after the (in)famous tea party hosted by Subramaniam Swamy in 1998, which resulted in the fall of NDA government. Though ideologically, she continued to follow a line closer to that of the BJP, the two could not come together as BJP had by then aligned with the DMK.
She forged United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) with non-BJP & non-Congress parties about six months ago. But it could not last long as she defied the UNPA resolution to abstain from Presidential elections by asking her party’s legislators to vote for the BJP candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhavat. Though she proferred a lame excuse that her party legislators voted without her knowledge, her adventure with UNPA came to end. The real reason for the discord, however, was Amma’s demand for the post of UNPA chairperson, which could not be accomodated by UNPA leaders . Of late, she has sent feelers to Sangh Parivar by supporting their stance on the Ram Sethu issue. The Modi-Amma meeting may thus be another step in forging the alliance.
The president of Tamil Nadu BJP, L Ganesan told B&E ,“it is an unofficial meeting.” But her dinner diplomacy with Modi shows she has made up her mind to align with NDA for the next elections. Going by her fickle temprament, one should not take her for granted.
